Research Project for Final year

We were asked to explore an area we are interested in and Fill out a form to define the question we will be asking ourselves. 
For my research I am going to explore how 3D Artists translate Concept art into and CGI environment using Level design and Digital Matte Printing, and how design features determine mood and atmosphere.

Research Topic. Outline in no more than 150 words what your project is going to explore. Is your topic concerning an issue, concept, processes or application that you want to acquire deeper knowledge and understanding in? Is it an area that you have not been able to fully explore?
For my research task I am going to explore how 3D artists translate concept art into a CGI environment and how this process takes place.  For this research task I am going to approach something I haven’t really been able to explore in my projects at University other than the latest project in Design Practice 3 ‘Sneinton Market’. The process I am going to research is based around how 3D artists, Visual Artists and Modellers re-create Buildings and architecture for films and games from concept art or historical buildings from blueprints and findings.  I would like to get a deeper understanding about this process as I feel it’s vital knowledge for the career path I would like to choose. I Such as what the 3D artist is thinking compared to the director, concept artist or author. This made me take more interest in this process especially through design practice 3.

Your Background: Outline in no more than 150 words how familiar you are already with this topic? Does it build on personal interest? Have you done any formal or informal investigation of this project already?

My understanding of this process is little but this is an area of visualisation that I am really interested in. I haven’t been able to research this thoroughly throughout my projects and briefs so far, so as this has become a big personal interest for me through my current project my curiosity into how the process takes place has grown, so I see this as a gain for the future because of the area in the industry I would to work such as Visualisation, 3D Modelling and Environments for games. This is still quite an unknown area to me and I am yet to start any investigations into this process. Through this research I want to conclude how concept art is transferred into a level design for a game, or for a film/ game cinematic digital matte printing.

Research sources. In week 2 of your final year you will be doing a presentation. At that presentation you will be asked for a number of specific research sources that are already aware of that will help you during the initial stages of the project. List as many of them now. They might be films, magazines, interviews, websites, YouTube links, etc

For my final year presentation I feel that some of my current sources would come from concept art, films and games mostly. I would also outline other sources such as magazines like 3D world, websites, opening days at major companies and even interviews.

Goals: In no more than 50 words outline what do you want to achieve as a result of working on this topic.

For this topic I want to achieve the understanding of how this process takes place, but also acquire the knowledge of how to thoroughly complete the translation from concept art to level design and Digital matte printing.

Problems: What initial problems can you see?

I think the main problem I may come across during this research would be my lack of knowledge to date in level design and digital matt printing. This may slow down my process and cause problems throughout. I also feel it could take some time to complete the 3D environments related to Piranesi’s artwork.

Summer break:  list the things you can be doing over the summer break to help you prepare.

Over the summer I will achieve the process many times over with a few environments and document my findings throughout this. Find how lighting and texturing can change the mood and atmosphere of a scene. This is because concept art may not fit the age limit of the media it’s being transferred into, and why they use certain elements and not others. I will achieve this by gaining a higher understanding through books, films, art and other Medias.
